San Francisco 49ers Forecast
-------------------------------------------------------------------
San Francisco 49ers (4-12)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(6) AJ Hawk, OLB. Ohio State
(22) Jimmy Wililams, DB. Virginia Tech
(84) David Thomas, TE. Texas
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As bad as the 49ers are and with how many needs the organization has, it is really unfortunate that the team is drafting 6th overall. They really deserve to be drafting earlier. Nevertheless, the team has four day one picks and plenty of an opponrtunity to make their franchise better. Defensively, the team needs linebackers first and foremost. Both of the slated starters, Corey Smith and Renauld Williams are not NFL caliber. The team also lacks skill in the defensive backfield. Whether by way of a safety or corner, the team could use some help. On the offensive side of the ball, the 49ers would prefer to surround Alex Smith with as much talent as possible. Finding talent at wide receiver and tight end is a priority. Both slots may be filled on day one.
(6) AJ Hawk, OLB. Ohio State
After Reggie Bush, the 49ers would most like to have AJ Hawk. Hawk is an omnipresent force on the field. His 4.48 speed is excellent for an outside linebacker, and he has proven time and time again that his football IQ is off the charts. Needing linebackers, the 49ers would find an excellent fit in Hawk. He presents good value at the #6 slot, and fills a gigantic team need. Both good in coverage and against the run, Hawk would be an immediate upgrade to a team that needs as many upgrades as possible.
(22) Jimmy Williams, DB. Virginia Tech
Jimmy Williams is one cocky SOB. In high school, he had "Destined 2" tattooed on his right forearm and "Be Great" put on his left. When he returned for his senior season at Virginia Tech, he was quoted as saying that he came back to "be the number one player in college football, not just the number one defensive back." This caliber of ego is looked upon poorly by most teams. Nevertheless, you can not reject the fact that Williams has top-notch abilities. His 6'2"/213 size is tremendous. He has productive experience both at safety and corner. Wililams is a ferrocious hitter that approaches the running game like a safety, even from the corner position. His 4.47 speed is only average among corners, but that kind of speed is ideal for a hard-hitting safety. Jimmy Williams is a legitimate high first-round talent who has seen his stock slip due solely to his ego. Regardless, the ego has been there for years alongside all the production on the field. He simply gets it done. That is all that matters when the chips fall.
(84) David Thomas, TE. Texas
Newsflash: Alex Smith struggled last year. The 49ers are willing to do whatever it takes to surrond him with talent. David Thomas is an ideal candidate. Thomas is the type of player that does nothing elitely well, but does everything very well. His 4.67 speed is good for a tight end, and his skill set is NFL-ready. Lacking the ability to stretch the field, Thomas is an excellent short to intermediate option for the 49ers offense. Slipping to the third round, Thomas will be absolutely impossible to pass up. His route-running is NFL-ready and his hands are excellent. He is a red zone threat that can make plays, evident by his ten catch performance in this year's Rose Bowl. At 6'3"/252, he would give Alex Smith a very reasonable option in the passing game.
(*) Vernon Davis, TE. Maryland
Vernon Davis is a legitimate option in the first round. Drafting Davis, the franchise could focus primarily on defense since Davis would allow them from having to draft both a wide receiver and a tight end. He is simply talented enough to satisfy both needs. If AJ hawk is off the board at #6, Vernon Davis would make the most sense for the franchise. Ultimately, the team would most like to have Alex Smth comfortable in the offense. A guy like Vernon Davis would certainly accomplish this. Davis is the #3 guy on the 49ers board and would make a great fit if AJ Hawk manages to be taken in the top five.
