New York Giants Forecast

New York Giants (11-5)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(25) Sinorice Moss, WR. Miami
(56) Orien Harris, DT. Miami
(87) Demario Minter, CB. Georgia
-------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the biggest surprises in the NFL last year was the New York Giants' defense. Book-ends Michael Strahan and Osi Umeniyora were devasating both as pass rushers and run stoppers. As good as those two were on the edge, help is needed inside. A big, run-stuffing tackle would make the defense that much better. An extra set of legs in the secondary would help matter outs as well. Corey Webster and Jason Bell leave a lot to be desired at the cornerback position. In addition, even if the Giants acquire LaVar Arrington, depth at the linebacker position is needed. The Unit really struggled last year. Offensively, finding a successor for the aging Amani Toomer would make sense in the middle rounds. However, most needs for the Giants fall with the defense.
(25) Sinorice Moss, WR. Miami
Before this past week, linebacker appeared to be a lock pick for the Giants. Having grabbed Lavar Arrington through free agency, the Giants now have the luxury of grabbing a value pick in the first round. Sinorice Moss is the type of player that the team does not need immediately, but that would enhance the roster now while supplying a future starter. Moss plays faster than his 4.38 speed. He simply can fly all over the field. His 5'8"/185 frame is diminutive, but receivers like his brother, Santana, and Steve Smith have opened offensive coordinators' eyes to what smaller receivers can do. A dangerous player in the return game, Moss simply has the explosiveness and agility to be able to take the ball the distance each and every time he touches the ball. While Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer are good starters in the meantime, there is neither depth as insurance nor a future option in the works. Sinorice Moss would make the Giant offense a legitimate nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators.
(56) Orien Harris, DT. Miami
The most pressing need in the defense is in the middle. While Umeniyora and Strahan dominated as pass rushers, no one separated themselves from the field as a run stuffer up the middle. Orien Harris has impressive size at 6'3"/301. He is able to both rush the passer and stuff the run. A good character guy, Harris will certainly catch the eye of the perfectionist, Tom Coughlin. Athletic and strong, Orien Harris simply gives the Giants a playmaker on the inside of their defensive line. Given team needs, a big, strong, experienced defensive tackle like Harris will be impossible to pass up in the second round.
(87) Demario Minter, CB. Georgia
Terrell Owens, Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, and Reggie Brown are all in the NFC East. Twice every year, the Giants will have to face these terrors. Having no reliable cover corner, the team could use a difference-maker like Demario Minter. In Demario Minter and Greg Blue, Georgia had two of the hardest hitting defensive backs in the country. Minter is a monster that knows how to lay the lumber. His speed is only average at 4.46, but he has fluid hips that allow him to play on an island in man coverage. At 5'11"/190, Minter has average size. Brian Billick, Balimore Ravens head coach, has said that Minter reminds him a lot of Chris McAllister. Why would someone the caliber of Chris McAllister slip to the third round? Demario has been arrested once for possession of marijuana. This matter occured in 2004, but it lingers in the minds of NFL mangement. Nevertheless, needing to find an impact player in the middle rounds, Minter is a risk worth taking. A perfectionist coach like Tom Coughlin will not put up with Minter's garbage.
(*) Gabe Watson, DT. Michigan
Gabe Watson is a run-stuffing defensive tackle. At 6'3"/339, he has NFL-ready size from day one. He has a questionable motor. On one play, he will look like a 7th round pick. On the next, he will look like a top five pick. During the Senior Bowl practices, he was on his game the entire week. He had to be taken out of certain inside running drills to allow the team to practice. With him on the field, the team could simply not move the ball up the middle. This type of ability and talent is just what the Gaints are looking for. Being a lazy underachiever, Watson's stock is very volatile. He could land anywhere between 20 and 40. However, if anyone has faith in character formation, it is the perfectionist and disciplinarian, Tom Coughlin.
